INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
To stimulate reflection on the indiscriminate use of pesticides, and their consequences for human health, and the environment, the conference “Towards an International Regulatory Framework for Pesticides” will take place at the Chamber of Deputies, Brasília, Brazil.
The current situation maintains a DEEP GLOBAL NORTH-SOUTH ASYMMETRY that exposes living beings unequally to highly toxic products. It is a PRIORITY to establish international rules that prohibit the commercialization and use of these substances in the Global South.
The objectives of the Conference:
- PROMOTE A NEW INTERNATIONAL REGULATORY FRAMEWORK for pesticides within the United Nations;
- Ban Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHP), substances harmful to the environment and human health;
- Phased elimination of pesticides
The event is promoted by the International Alliance for Pesticide Standardization – IPSA, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the International Center for Water and Transdisciplinarity – CIRAT, the Public Labor Ministry – MPT, and the Federal Public Ministry – MPF.
The curation, featuring national and international specialists, is led by Larissa Bombardi, a professor in the Department of Geography at USP, a member of IPSA, and an associate researcher at CESSMA in Europe, where she lives in exile.
This initiative is part of an arrangement that includes a second round of discussions at the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels on October 29, 2024. The ultimate goal of the two conferences is to encourage the creation of an international regulatory framework within the United Nations (UN) for the issue of pesticides, given the insufficiency of existing conventions.
