ABOUT US
We are a group of institutions established in 2022 with the purpose of proposing an international regulatory framework for pesticides, establishing strict and clear rules for the sale and marketing of such compounds among United Nations member countries. The creation of the group was motivated by the significant asymmetry among different national regulations regarding pesticide use and the thousands of cases of deaths and poisonings potentially linked to the consumption and contact with these substances.
The International Pesticide Standard Alliance (IPSA) benefits from the scientific expertise of Dr. Larissa Mies Bombardi, a professor in the Department of Geography at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, who is a national and international reference in the study of pesticides. The group is composed of representatives from the National Forum for Combating the Impacts of Pesticides and members of the Brazilian Federal Public Ministry, as well as other researchers and representatives of civil society from Brazil and other countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Europe.
During the UN Water Conference in 2023, IPSA was officially established with the signing of its statement at an event held at the Blue Gallery in New York. The event garnered the presence and support of João Paulo Capobianco, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment of Brazil, and Dr. Marcos Orellana, Special Rapporteur on toxics and human rights at the United Nations.
Our principles include
Water rights and
strategic actions
Social participation & inclusion in water/sanitation decisions for vulnerable communities
Human rights advocacy & social justice promotion
OUR GOALS
Due to the significant disparity among various national regulations concerning highly toxic pesticides and the numerous cases of deaths and poisonings attributed to the use of these substances, IPSA is an alliance that aims to establish an International Regulatory Framework. The main goal is to set standards for the production, sale, and use of pesticides among the countries that are signatories of the United Nations, as well as to ban the marketing of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs). This ensures food security and promotes better health for both people and the environment worldwide.
WHAT DO WE
FOCUS?
WHAT DO WE FOCUS?
The global elimination of highly hazardous pesticides (based on the list from the Pesticide Action Network)
The adoption of uniform standards for pesticide residue levels in food and water
The global prohibition of aerial pesticide spraying
The gradual feasibility of transitioning from the current chemical-dependent agricultural model to a locally-based and sustainable production model, aimed at food security and sovereignty
